How to calibrate your TV

We purchase our own TVs and put them under the same test bench, so that you can compare the results easily. No cherry-picked units sent by brands. These settings should apply to most types of content, except for gaming or use as a PC monitorwhich require a few additional changes, listed below. One of the first things we did was disable all of the power saving and automatic image modes, as we don't want the TV to adjust the image during testing.

You should adjust these settings to your preference. For SDR content, there are a whopping 10 preset picture modes. We recommend choosing the 'isf Expert Dark Room ' picture mode, as it is the most accurate one out of the box, and allows for the most customization.

If you watch in a brighter room, 'isf Expert Bright Room ' is almost as accurate. We recommend setting the Contrast to '90', Sharpness at '0', Color at '50', and Tint at '0'. Changing this setting does not have any impact on the overall picture quality.

The Brightness setting adjusts the image itself, and not the TV's luminosity.

Social matching and link prediction

We usually recommend leaving this at '50'. We left the Color Gamut set to 'Auto', so the C9 will choose the proper color gamut depending on the content. We set the Gamma to 2. We chose the 'Warm 2' Color Temperaturewhich was the default for some picture modes.

HDR is automatically enabled for the native apps. Older devices may have compatibility issues if this option is left enabled, so it is recommended to only enable this setting for devices that require it. The C9 supports Dolby Vision, from native apps and with most external devices. As with normal HDR content, when you start playing Dolby Vision content, some settings change automatically. We recommend leaving these settings as-is, do not copy our SDR settings over. With 'Cinema Home', we noticed some issues in dark scenes, including raised black levels, and a bright flash in some scene transitions.

If you find HDR content too dim, there are a few things you can try. Adjusting the Dynamic Contrast setting is a good place to start. The 'High' setting increases the brightness the most, but also darkens some dark details even further, as shown in the EOTF. Setting it to 'Medium' instead doesn't increase the brightness as much, but has less of an impact on dark scenes, as shown in this EOTF.

You can also try enabling Dynamic Tone Mapping. Although we don't normally recommend this feature, it analyzes each frame to try and determine the optimal tone mapping. This can make some bright scenes brighter, but also some dark scenes darker, which can cause some loss of detail. The OSD had a large array of calibration and convenience options certain to appeal to gamers and graphics pros alike. If you just want to tweak basic luminance, color temp and audio settings, head to the first sub-menu.

These options also appear in other menus and are specific to each picture mode. The input selector shows audio status and offers aspect ratio control. The Picture menu has everything needed to find the perfect image. Calibrating with it created an internal look-up table stored within the 27UK Pre-calibrated options include Rec. The default mode is Custom and allows full adjustment of grayscale, color and gamma.

In Custom, the default settings were correct for optimal picture quality, as shown above. Use the latter if you have trouble seeing detail in shadow areas. Response Time worked best on the Fast middle setting to reduce motion blur without significant ghosting. Color Adjust offers four gamma presets and three color temps, plus a custom mode with RGB sliders.

They begin at center-range, which let us achieve accurate grayscale tracking without losing too much contrast. The Six Color menu has hue and saturation controls for all primary and secondary cyan, magenta, orange colors. In the Sound menu, you can control volume and toggle MaxxAudio on and off. It significantly improves the sound quality of the built-in speakers. The General menu has all remaining options, like OSD language, energy saving, sleep mode and the like.

We saw no reason to change any of them from their default settings. After measuring several picture modes, we were surprised to find none of them delivered the results shown on the enclosed factory data sheet.

LG 32UD99 Ultra HD HDR FreeSync Monitor Review

In fairness to LG, the document does not specify which picture mode was measured. Custom is the default mode and it too required tweaking for best results. We worked the fine-resolution RGB sliders and lowered contrast slightly to bring the 27UK to a professional level of accuracy. The only compromise was in the gamma setting. Mode 2 ran slightly under 2. After making comparisons using actual content, we settled on Mode 3 because it added a little depth and saturation.

Need some help with hdr picture settings for lg skpla. Not good in calibration. There a lot of blurring. PlexShaw Well-known Member.

Rtings are usually a good place to start:. PlexShaw said:. Fair enough. You might need to tweak some of them to make them work where the TV is located I had to do so with mine. Also, it's helpful to let us know what you've already tried and, perhaps, provide more detail on what the issue s you had with it were.

Last edited: Sep 25, There is a lot of blurring and picture is awful in the dark scene. Out of interest, did you try the picture setting suggestions from the Rtings page?

I only ask because the settings you have in those screenshots are nothing like their suggestions? They're not the be-all-end-all but I've found they made a good starting point.

I have a 49SJV Nano Cell model Model and for Dolby Vision and HDR10 you want to kill or switch off all digital processing for a start switch then all off I believe Rtings have done that already in fact they do that with all their reviews. Dolby Vision set it to Cinema Home Do not engage any dynamic contrast their is absolutely no need to engage it Dolby Vision is pretty bright.

Local dimming switch to medium or low. Kill any motion prosesing. I can take pictures of mine if you like.

On my TV dolby vision is very bright crisp and sharp no blurryness what so ever. I also get a very or pretty decent HDR10 preformance as well.

You should adjust these settings to your preference though. For SDR content, there are 9 preset picture modes. We recommend choosing the 'ISF Expert Dark Room ' picture mode, as it is the most accurate one out of the box, and allows for the most customization. If you watch in a brighter room, 'isf Expert Bright Room ' is almost as accurate. We recommend setting the Contrast to '90', Sharpness at '0', Color at '50,' and Tint at '0.

To adjust the TV's luminosity, you should adjust the Backlight setting depending on your specific viewing conditions. Changing this setting does not have any impact on the overall picture quality. The Brightness setting adjusts the image itself, and not the TV's luminosity. We usually recommend leaving this at ' We left the Color Gamut set to 'Auto,' so the UM will choose the proper color gamut depending on the content. We set the Gamma to 2. Adjusting the Dynamic Contrast can help a bit for some content. The 'High' setting increases the brightness the most, and extremely dark scenes are brightened a bit. Although we disable most motion enhancing functions for most of our tests, you should adjust these to whatever looks best for you.

Some settings, like motion interpolation settings, may need to be adjusted depending on the specific content you are watching. Although we usually leave these settings disabled during testing, you should adjust these settings to your liking, as different people prefer different levels of motion interpolation.

If you want to enable motion interpolation, set TruMotion to 'User', and adjust the De-Judder slider. The LG UM is able to remove judder only from 24p sources. Once this setting is enabled for the input you are using, the UM should automatically switch to the 'Game' Picture Mode when it detects a game is being played, and switch out of it when you stop playing.

For an optimal PC gaming experience and for proper chroma support, it is important to set the input label to 'PC' for the HDMI port you are using. Once you have set the label, it is recommended to reapply our base SDR or HDR settings, as the picture modes change when you set the label. This can be done from the new 'Home Dashboard' menu. Depending on the format you are sending, it might also be necessary to enable the Ultra HD Deep Color setting for the port you are using. The following are the results of the white balance and colorspace calibration on our unit.

They are provided for reference, and should not be copied as the calibration values vary per individual unit even for the same model and same size as the TV we reviewed due to manufacturing tolerances. If you want to try them you will need to enter all values shown, as all of them are active at the same time.No matter how much of a novice you are, there is some level of video adjustment you can handle yourself. If you absolutely must have the best, feel free to call a pro — only they can provide true calibrations.

This guide is designed to help those who want to do a manual adjustment without the aid of a calibration disc. It will get you closer to your ideal settings and facilitate faster fine-tuning later. However, a calibration disc can bring your TV to the next level. There are a number of video calibration discs available, but we have two favorites. While it may be hard for proud videophiles to admit it, this Disney disc is both comprehensive and intuitive, and the more we use it, the more we like it.

It provides clear, easy-to-understand on-screen instructions as well as online support, and does away with the often corny and cheesy voice-overs associated with other calibration discs.

Though many of these terms tend to be easy to pick up and understand immediately, TV manufacturers seem intent on making things more confusing by applying their own proprietary nomenclature to terms like contrast, saturation, etc. Our top source recommendation is a Blu-ray disc player — either of the standard or Ultra HD variety — or game console. That sort of detail will come in handy later. Plus, calibrating your TV for the best possible picture source right out of the gate just makes sense.

The key is to get the best source possible while maintaining the ability to pause images as needed. Computer-animated films can make excellent sources of vivid color and resolution detail, but live-action films are going to be better for judging more subtle aspects like skin tone accuracy and shadow detail.

Your TV will come with several different picture modes and presets. These are usually labeled sports, games, vivid, movie, cinema or standard — some will even get specific as to which type of sport. Most of these are horribly out of whack. The movie, cinema or standard settings serve as the best launchpads for creating your own custom settings.

Keep in mind that a Blu-ray disc image is natively very high quality and requires little to no processing help anyway. The very first thing we suggest you disable is the motion smoothing feature, e. These processors make everything you watch look like a soap opera and defeat the cinematography that makes films look amazing.Deals Amazon deals Bargain threads Classified adverts.

Tegs Active Member. Hi As a new E9 owner I thought I'd see what new owners preferred settings and picture modes are? I always used isf Bright room on my E8 and have continued this with my E9 although I find Standard pretty good as well with isf Dark a little to dark for me.

I have trumotion turned off but AI turned on along with Smooth graduation to lowReal Cinema to On and Black level to low with pretty much everything else to off which I find works well on isf Bright. Tegs said:. This mode gets closest to our calibration targets of Rec, D65, 2.

The Rtings 'settings' incorrectly target 2. All everyone talks about is ISF Dark. Thats good and well for the low amount of SD Content I watch. What about for HDR? HDR Gaming, etc I wonder why rtings didn't bother here.

I have tried and tried and cant get isf dark to work for me. I am using standard but sometimes find the picture a little undefined - I then go onto youtube and run one of the 4k hdr files that look amazing and wonder why I cant find anything that wows me at all with any combination of modes and settings while watching sky hd or antenna - anyone else????

Have you find any settings yet? I an having similar issues, also struggling with flickering on movement of people on Sky Q TV channels. Picture also a tad fuzzy through Sky box.

I went to standard yesterday. Oled on 80, colour 60, sharpness 30 rest pretty much standard settings. Picture quality is hot and miss through Sky q box at time especially BBC.HDR10 is one of the two most prominent HDR formats though there are others lurking around looking for a niche. Both of these formats require specialized, and different, calibration techniques.

Dolby Vision has, until recently, been used only by Vizio on the display side, and Dolby Vision content is available only from a few websites. But a few points are worth mentioning. But with a plasma, the peak brightness drops off as the signal fills more and more of the screen area. As with SDR on a plasma, this has no obvious effect on the image. But it is significant because the size of the window pattern will affect the results of a calibration.

For my testing I used a Murideo Six-G v1. The default settings of the Standard Picture Mode, however, produced a poor result. The latter settings, at least on our sample, came very close to the proper luminance results at different levels. But your best approach, especially for a flagship set such as this, would be to have a professional calibration. But check to be sure that your calibrator has experience in setting up a set for HDR.

At this stage, not all calibrators have such experience. Like them, we are still stumbling a bit in the darkness when it comes to HDR. I believe I have a handle on it, but by my fingertips. As will all new formats, things do change.
